Spotlight : September 1998

This Is The End
By Todd Vaziri

First off, I'd like to thank all of you who took the time to email me their concerns regarding the future of VFX HQ. I read some passionate letters, the vast majority of them hoping that the future would remain bright--that VFX HQ would continue as it has been for the past three years. Many were also very supportive and understanding of my reasons for considering the future of the site. Thank you all very much.

Amidst all of the overwhelming support that VFX HQ has received from you, the readers, it is with great sadness that I bring you the news that VFX HQ will cease production at the end of 1998. Coverage of effects films will continue

"VFX HQ will cease production at the end of 1998."

throughout the end of 1998, but it will consist mainly of effects reviews. Effects Houses, Digital Tools, and other sections of the VFX HQ will no longer be updated.

On January 1, 1999, VFX HQ will become VFX HQ Archive. No pages, information, or graphics will be taken offline, with the exception of the entire 1999 Productions section. I have plans to switch VFX HQ's server (the current service is far too expensive), but the domain name VFXHQ.com will still exist.

A great deal of thought went into this decision. As some of you know (and many of the readers of VFX HQ don't know), VFX HQ is, and always has been, a one man operation. Much has changed in my life over the past three years, and I have determined that it is simply impossible to maintain the level of quality I feel VFX HQ deserves, due to my busy career and my personal life.

Many of you have written with the concept of keeping the site alive, with fewer updates; others have offered assistance in HTML and web server maintanence. The fact is, the actual process of updating the site constitutes perhaps 5% of the work involved. The countless hours of research, interviews and writing make up the vast majority of the workload. I also entertained the idea of turning the site into a much larger endeavor, but it called into question my priorities, and where my energies are best served.

Once again, thank you all for your generous support. If you're at all interested in what I'm up to in the future, feel free to visit my personal web site at http://www.vfxhq.com/tvaziri.
